Efficiency
A recent study conducted by the University of Kansas for the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) and the Kansas Department of Transportation evaluated the initial and life-cycle costs of epoxy-coated reinforcing steel. The study found that the initial cost of an epoxy-coated bridge deck was USD 196 per square yard, compared to USD 189 per square yard for an uncoated bridge deck. Therefore, the incremental cost was only USD 7 per square yard.
The research further showed that over a 75-year service life, using a 4% discount rate, the life-cycle cost of a bridge deck with epoxy-coated reinforcing steel was USD 237 per square yard, whereas the life-cycle cost of a deck with uncoated reinforcing steel was USD 444 per square yard. This represents a life-cycle cost savings of USD 207 per square yard when using epoxy-coated reinforcing steel. From this, it can be concluded that:
1. The return on investment (ROI) for epoxy-coated reinforcing steel reaches 2857% based on the formula {($207 - $7) / $7 × 100}.
2. Epoxy-coated reinforcing steel is a strong, cost-effective, and highly reliable investment for long-lasting and durable concrete structures.
Sustainability
The definition of sustainable development is: “development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs, achieved through balancing social, economic, and environmental impacts.”
Epoxy-coated reinforcing steel is widely used and contributes to sustainability in the following ways:
1. Recycled Materials: Epoxy-coated reinforcing steel is produced from standard rebar products, which typically contain over 97% recycled content, primarily sourced from post-consumer materials. They are coated safely using environmentally friendly powders.
2. Embodied Energy: Epoxy-coated reinforcing steel requires lower embodied energy during manufacturing compared to other corrosion-resistant reinforcement options.
3. Durability: Epoxy-coated reinforcing steel has demonstrated over 40 years of proven field performance and significantly enhances the durability of concrete structures.
4. Cost: The cost of epoxy-coated reinforcing steel is lower than other corrosion-protection systems.
